Emergence expectations (Wheat School)

Don’t let vigor and germination be your only determinants of what your plant emergence is. Vigor is not the direct opposite of seedling mortality and we often see greater mortality than what is left after vigor is included. Moisture, temperature, compaction, seeding rate, disease, etc will all impact actual emergence. It is vital to check your actual emergence a few weeks after seeding to determine your actual plant stand and subsequently your mortality rate. This information can be used to make stronger seeding rate decisions in following seasons.
