The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) is a provincial grower organization representing Alberta’s 14,000 wheat producers, dedicated to leading the wheat industry forward. AWC invests in major program areas including research, communications and extension, market development and agriculture policy.

Agronomy and Producer Engagement Intern

The Agronomy and Producer Engagement Intern position is an exciting summer opportunity for a student looking to gain practical experience in the agriculture industry, specifically related to wheat research. The successful candidate will take on communication and extension initiatives in the areas of wheat agronomics and participate in field tours, Twitter feeds and help develop content for AWC’s Wheat Watch publication. The ideal candidate is a motivated and creative self-starter with a working knowledge of agricultural science and will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Tasks will include:

  • Developing communication materials aimed at connecting farmers to the research community, including magazine and newsletter articles, content for brochures and Tweets and blog posts for
  • Connecting with AWC-funded researchers to profile their research objectives and to make their findings accessible to producers and the wheat industry (also a great way to expand your network!).
  • Shadowing regional agronomists and researchers to gain insight into the 2018 wheat crop year and reporting these challenge and success stories to the AWC producer network.
  • Interacting with the public and producers at industry events to promote the AWC Research Program.
  • Increasing the AWC research presence via various social media platforms (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
  • Participating in Research Management and Communication activities as needed.
  • Interacting with AWC board of directors and Alberta wheat producers to develop AWC research priorities.


  • The ideal candidate will be enrolled in their 3rd, or 4th year of an Agriculture degree program at a recognized post-secondary institution, preferably in the area of Crop or Plant Science (related areas of study will also be considered) at a recognized post-secondary institution and have an interest in agriculture.
  • Passion for the agriculture industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed project management abilities and an independent work ethic.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills.

This is a great opportunity for networking, hands-on experience and exposure to all aspects of a crop commission that represents producers in Alberta.

This position will be based out of Calgary and will require some travel to research site locations around Alberta. This position will pay $20/h, plus travel expenses. This will be a summer term position from May 7th to August 24th, 2018.
